It’s been over seven months since Boab Toys went live. I thought I would take a moment to tell you a little about myself, my family and our journey to the heart of Boab Toys.
It all started when my partner and I moved to Broome. We left the South West young, in love and chasing adventure. We loaded our ute with a couple of swags, a small tent, some clothing, and of course our pet dog. We had our life savings – a total of nearly $800 🙂 – at our disposal and were heading around Australia on a working holiday.
With a vague plan in place, we hit the road
We had a fantastic time exploring the West Coast. We checked out many great camping spots and met some awesome people along the way. There are some exciting locations to stay such as beach camping and station stays all along the coast. Most of these tie in with attractions such as the Pinnacles, Steep Point (the western most point of Australia), Ningaloo Reef and Kalbarri but to name a few.
This photo was taken at Steep Point – the western most mainland point of Australia. I would highly recommend checking it out.
Having travelled a few k’s and enjoying life at some hot spots, reality set in. Turns out $800 on the road doesn’t get you far and we had to get serious about finding work.
Chris and I arrived in Broome just a few weeks later, where I met a new and long term friend. She introduced me to the early childhood industry and my passion for kids began.
Fast forward a few years and Chris and I had our first child, Jacob. Now that was the start of a real adventure! As new parents, I don’t think we could have ever imagined how life would change. Suddenly, life was all about Jacob and we had little time for anything – including sleep. I know all you parents out there can relate. But, I can say with absolute confidence, it was the greatest gift we could have received.
Like most families, Jacob is everything to us. We enjoy spending so much quality time together and sometimes it’s the simplest of things. We love to head down to Cable Beach when we can. Sunset down there is amazing and Jacob can run free. He feels he can do what he wants, when he wants. He enjoys playing in the sand, getting wet and throwing the ball to our dog – Flash. Its these very simple things that make childhood so rewarding for children and adults alike.
I thought I’d include this photo. Its of Jacob and Chris enjoying the sunset together at Cable Beach. Although it was taken a couple of years ago, it still reminds me why family time is so special.
Thinking about quality family time, and how important it is for children to play, Chris and I decided to open the Kimberley’s first online toy shop. We have a vision to help children and families learn, play and create new memories together. I have used my experience as an early childhood educator, centre manager and most importantly mother to carefully select a range of products that I know you and your loved one will cherish for years to come.
I have selected wooden toys which are only produced from timber that has been sustainably grown. That means that the trees are either plantation timber with FSC certification or crops which have ended their usable life. For example, toys made from rubber wood are from rubber tree plantations that no longer produce a viable amount rubber and would usually be cut down and burnt. Instead, our fantastic manufacturers reuse the timber to make quality toys for you and your loved ones to enjoy.
This image is from the Ever Earth website and shows the true effects of sustainable forestry as the countryside is transformed back into its natural beauty.
With a focus on the environment, sustainability, education and most importantly FUN, I truly believe that we can help you and your loved one create new memories together and grow the way nature intended it.
Now you know a bit about where we came from, stay tuned for out next blog to find out how we created our business from the ground up.
In the meantime, don’t forget to check out our range of wooden and educational toys.
