About Us

Welcome to Boab Toys!

Do you remember that absolute freedom as a child? The classic wooden rocking horse? The timber train set that was passed down from your parents’ parents? The excitement of playing with real toys and creating real memories.

Boab Toys is here to help you create new memories with your loved one.

After having our first child and working in early childhood education for a significant period of time, I realised how important play was. I wanted to create the Kimberley’s first online toy shop, helping children around the country create lasting memories. My goal was to find products that will last the test of time, capture children’s attention, keep them engaged and help to teach them about themselves, others and the environment.

As you kick back and browse this site, you will notice that by purchasing one of our many products, you are not only helping your child, but helping children in countries such as Vietnam and China eat, live and learn through organisations such as QToys and EverEarth. You can also contribute to environmental programs through the EverEarth Plant a Tree Scheme.

Boab Toys is your one stop shop for all things wooden and educational. All toys have been carefully selected by me to ensure they provide absolute enjoyment to children while assisting with their development. After all, learning is child’s play!

The History of Wooden Toys:

Children’s toys date back further than most can imagine. Some of the very oldest toys were unearthed at various ancient sites. Toys excavated from Indus valley civilization (3010-1500 BCE) consisted of small carts, whistles shaped like birds and toy monkeys that slid down a string.

The earliest known toys were made from rocks, sticks and clay. Egyptian children played with dolls with wigs and movable limbs made from stone, pottery and wood. The oldest puzzle game came from Greece in the 3rd century BC, consisting of a square divided into 14 parts. The goal was to create different shapes from these pieces.

John Spilsbury made the first jigsaw puzzle in 1767. He cut maps into pieces in order for children to learn geography and before long, jigsaw puzzles were made for entertainment.

The first wooden doll house was made in Germany in 1558 and by the 19th century, middle class girls played with wooden or porcelain dolls and doll houses. During the 16th century, children played with wood made dolls called Bartholomew babies; named after the St. Bartholomew’s fair where they were sold in London. Unfortunately, poor children could not afford these luxuries so made their own toys.

As you can see, wooden toys (and other materials) have been entertaining children for many centuries. Wood toys, especially, are very durable, reliable and can last for many generations. These toys have been passed down from one generation to another, becoming family heirlooms and creating many wonderful memories.

Wooden toys inspire children, helping them to evoke life-long memories and have been proven to live up to their value.
